Build Your Own Pool is a pool building resource with expertise in design and construction. BYOP offer professional templates or custom designed plans for the pool of your dreams. Let’s begin planning and preparing for a clean and beautiful pool.
Pool equipment
Choosing your pool’s circulation and filtration system is one of the first steps before you begin the building process. Experts can provide you with greater detail when you choose a pool design or request a customized pool plan. Every pool has a similar pump and filter system to keep the pool clean by circulating and filtering the water. Gas heaters, solar heaters, chlorine feeders, saltwater chlorinators, UV lights, and ozone generators are available through pool contractors that are listed in the list of contractors provided when you purchase a pool plan.
1. Pool Pump
The pump is electronically powered and will suck pool water through the skimmer and main drain pipes and then through a filter and back into the pool. The pump is a major component in the pool cleaning process, and it will require regular maintenance. The straining basket needs to be cleaned regularly to keep the pump from getting clogged or overheated, which could trip the electrical breaker or potentially cause internal damage. Read your pump manual thoroughly before beginning to use your pool.
2. Pool Filter
The pool’s filter is a large tank that is used to remove particles from the pool water. There are three popular types of filters, including silica sand filters, cartridge filters and D.E/diatomaceous filters. Sand filters contain hundreds of pounds of sand and require periodic back-washing to remove debris from the screen that has been washed from a pool. Cartridge filters use a series of paper cartridges to filter the pool water. The paper cartridges can catch the more delicate materials floating in the pool water and provide cleaner water, but they cost considerably more than sand filters. D.E filters can catch the finest particles but require the most maintenance and care.
All pool filters require cleaning and regular maintenance. Before beginning to build your pool, decide which filtration system is best for you. While some systems clean the water much better, they will be more expensive to run and require more maintenance.
3. Pool Heater
Your pool can be heated with the use of propane or natural gas. It is costly to heat a pool, and you can discuss ways to save money using solar heating or placing your pool an area where the sun can provide natural warmth. The pool’s water needs to be correctly balanced to protect the heating system. The pool chemistry is a number one killer for gas heaters. Before using your pool heater, read the instructions and learn how to care for the water and keep the chemistry balanced to protect the heater.
A pool heat pump uses electricity and technology that is similar to an air conditioner to transfer energy that warms the water. The heat pump requires specific temperatures and has limitations in performance. A heat pump is recommended in warm sunny weather. Talk with your pool expert at Build Your Own Pool to learn more about choosing a pool design and heater.
4. Chlorine or Saltwater chlorine Generator
Chlorine is used to sanitize the pool’s water and to provide a clean and safe environment for swimming. Chlorine comes in different forms, including pucks, powder, liquid, gas and salt water. Choosing a chlorination system is an important part of building your pool. Salt water systems generate a smaller amount of chlorine that can provide the same amount of cleanliness. Saltwater systems use about the same amount of chlorine as drinking water. Saltwater chlorination systems still use chlorine as their primary source of cleaning power. Saltwater systems do not require buying chlorine or adding chlorine to the pool because the saltwater system creates chlorine.
Pool Water Chemistry and Balance
Having balanced water chemistry is an important part of keeping your pool clean, safe and clear. Pool water chemistry is crucial because unbalanced or poorly treated spa or pool water can destroy your pool equipment and the pool. Most pool frustrations, wasted money and closed pool time are related to poor water chemistry. Before building your pool, take the time and do some research before deciding which cleaning process to choose.
